All,

Some questions about networking with peers:

1. How many of your network with other computer consultants?

2. How many have gotten business that way either by referral or via
subcontract?

3. How many have been able to find subcontractors to help you pull off
a project?

4. How lucrative has it been?

To answer my own questions:

1. I try to network with other computer consultants (of any sort, not
just programmers) regularly. Belonging to the ICCA helps in this
regard, but I also pursue it on my own to the point of hosting my own
networking meetings at times.

2. I've gotten more signed subcontracts than signed contracts on
referral. That may be because the referrals happen in the early
stages when no one has determined whether the project is feasible,
whereas the subcontracts happen much later, after the client has
committed money.

3. I've gotten some good subcontract work done by people I met via
networking with other consultants.

4. Around a quarter of a million bucks so far. Not bad. Smile

Not bad at all. And it's only April. Merry Christmas.

I do, but not through any group like ICCA; I'm trying to meet
consultants in my area and let them know I'm available for
subcontracting in my specialties.

Not much recently; just one this year that actually ended up in some
work.

Not at all; it's tough to find good help. Wink Especially in my areas.

One long term (15 or so years) contact has been very lucrative.
Most others not very, if at all.

Have you gotten (m)any referrals from ICCA?

Do you do any of your networking at a local bar? I'd like to meet you
and buy you a drink.

I didn't earn of of it this year. I wish. That's been spread over 8
years, combined with projects gotten other ways (adverising,
networking with potential clients, etc.).

How do you meet other consultants? I use my existing networks and
tell people that I want to meet other consultants. I then organize
dinners at restaurants and invite every computer consultant that I
know or have met briefly at some point. I usually get a turn-out
around 5 or 6, but I've had as many as a dozen show up.

Have you had much in the past?

That's very true, I've found.

Where are you?

Wow. 15 years is a long contract indeed. That's almost twice as long
as I've been in business. Smile

> Have you gotten (m)any referrals from ICCA?

I've gotten a couple. One went nowhere and the other died after I
wrote (and got paid for) the requirements document. I also had a
situation where I found a good subcontractor for a project.

I've given out a number of referrals to hardware/software guys and
database experts.
